MPE2013 is a world initiative to hold scientific and outreach activities on the theme of "Mathematics of Planet Earth" in 2013: http://www.mpe2013.org. Partners (mainly scientific institutes and learned societies) commit to organize activities related to the theme. The mission is to increase the engagement of mathematicians -- researchers, teachers, students -- as well as the public, with the role of mathematics in issues affecting our Planet Earth and its future. The type of activities include thematic programs, workshops, special MPE sessions at meetings of learned societies, MPE colloquium talks, MPE public lectures, a competition for an open source exhibition of virtual modules, etc. _____________________________ 2. POSTING ON THE WEBSITE The website is posting activities related to MPE 2013, and also press releases of articles related to MPE 2013. Projects of partners are posted attached to their names. Finalized projects are posted on the main site. Please send relevant information to mpe2013@crm.umontreal.ca _______________ 3. NORTH-AMERICAN LAUNCHES OF MPE 2013 The Canadian launch of MPE2013 will take place at the 2012 Winter Meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) in Montreal on December 8-10, 2012, in partnership with the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematical Society CAIMS. The meeting will have plenary lectures, special sessions and two public lectures (one in English and one in French) related to MPE 2013. The US launch of MPE 2013 will be at the Joint Mathematics Meetings on January 9-12, 2013 in San Diego. We anticipate invited lectures, special sessions, panels, an open house, an art exhibit and more. Save the dates! ________________ 4. SCHOLARPEDIA A new encyclopedia "Encyclopedia of Mathematics and Planet Earth" is started on Scholarpedia: http://www.scholarpedia.org/article/Scholarpedia:Mathematics_of_Planet_Earth _______________ 5. EXTENSION OF THE DEADLINE FOR THE MATHEMATICS OF PLANET EARTH COMPETITION FOR AN OPEN SOURCE EXHIBITION OF VIRTUAL MODULES http://www.mpe2013.org/competition The deadline of the competition is extended till September 15, 2012. The website is now ready for receiving submission. We appreciate your help in making the competition known to all those who could be interested. The Mineralien-und Mathematikmuseum, MiMa, (http://www.mima.museum) and the Stiftung Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin (http://www.sdtb.de) have agreed to show the winning modules. _______________ 6. STUDENT POSTER AWARD AT IAMG 2013 The 15th Annual Conference of the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences will take place in Madrid on September 2-6, 2013 http://www.igme.es/internet/iamg2013/ and will have an MPE component. In particular, there will be a poster award "Frontiers of Mathematical Geosciences: new approaches to understand the natural world", with focus on promoting curiosity and alerting students about the importance of Mathematics to the scientific development of the Earth Sciences. Three categories have been established: teams of secondary school students, teams of graduate students, PhD students. http://www.igme.es/internet/iamg2013/student.htm ________________ 7. PRIZE IN CELESTIAL MECHANICS FOR PLANET EARTH AT CELMEC VI On the occasion of the special year of emphasis on the Mathematics of Planet Earth, a prize will be awarded to the best presentation of an original research work aimed at the safeguard of our planet from space threatens: http://adams.dm.unipi.it/~simca/celmecVI/prizes.html The prize will be awarded under the auspices of the Gruppo Nazionale di Fisica Matematica/INdAM and Societ\'87 Italiana di Meccanica Celeste e Astrodinamica (SIMCA). ______________ 8.
