April 7-8, 2001,
UQAM, Montreal First Announcement

Organizers:
S. Boyer (boyer@math.uqam.ca) and A.S. Sikora (sikora@crm.umontreal.ca, sikora@math.uqam.ca)

Subject: 3-dimensional topology and knot theory

Web page: www.crm.umontreal.ca/~sikora/conference.html

The purpose of the conference is to bring together mathematicians interested in knot theory and 3-dimensional topology from Canada and the northern and eastern parts of the United States. However, all participants are welcome. We hope that this conference will mark the beginning of an annual conference in knot theory in Montreal. The conference will take place at Universite de Quebec a Montreal, located in downtown Montreal. We will schedule the first talks either on April 7 at 9am or one day earlier during the afternoon of April 6, depending on the number of speakers. Therefore, we encourage the participants to arrive in Montreal on April 6th. We will try to arrange the transportation to and from the airport and the accommodation during your stay in Montreal. The conference will end on April 8 in the early afternoon. Our meeting will be preceded by a workshop on Symplectic and Contact Topology, Quantum Cohomology, Symplectic Field Theory and Higher-Dimensional Gauge Theory taking place in Fields Institute in Toronto (March 26- March 30) and at CRM in Montreal (April 2-April 7). See http://www.fields.utoronto.ca/programs/scientific/00-01/symplectic /sym_topology/ for more details. We plan 6-7 talks, each 50 min. long, and additionally some number of 20 min. talks. An exact schedule will be announced soon. We anticipate that we will be able to partially cover expenses for travel and accommodation of the participants. Please let us know if you would like to participate in the conference. Also, let us know if your answer to any of the questions below is "yes." * Do you need an official invitation for our conference? * Would you like us to arrange an accommodation for the time of your stay in Montreal? If yes, please indicate the dates of your arrival and departure as well as the number of people which will accompany you. * We anticipate to be able to partially reimburse the travel and accommodation expenses of participants. Would you like to be considered for such reimbursement? If yes, please send us the estimated cost of your travel expenses. * Would you like to give a 20 min talk? If yes, please send us the title and the abstract of your talk. We will try to accommodate your request. However, given the anticipated number of speakers, it may not be possible.
