MPE2013 is a world initiative to hold scientific and outreach activities on the theme of "Mathematics of Planet Earth" in 2013: www.mpe2013.org. Partners (mainly scientific institutes and learned societies) commit to organize activities related to the theme. The mission is to increase the engagement of mathematicians -- researchers, teachers, students -- as well as the public, with the role of mathematics in issues affecting our Planet Earth and its future. The type of activities include thematic programs, workshops, special MPE sessions at meetings of learned societies, MPE colloquium talks, MPE public lectures, a competition for an open source exhibition of virtual modules, etc. _____________________________ 2. POSTING ON THE WEBSITE The website is posting activities related to MPE2013, and also press releases of articles related to MPE2013. Projects of partners are posted attached to their names. Finalized projects are posted on the main site. Please send relevant information to mpe2013@crm.umontreal.ca Partners of MPE 2013 are invited to highlight their MPE2013 activities by adding the MPE icon next to the activity (see for instance www.aimath.org/research/upcoming.html). They are also invited to create their own MPE webpage (see for instance http://maa.org/pubs/mpe2013.html and https://www.amstat.org/outreach/international.cfm). Partners will be sent again the information for finding logos and web banner. _____________________________ 3. PLANNING WORKSHOP AT AIM ON MARCH 9-10 2012 The second planning workshop took place at American Institute of Mathematics in Palo Alto with around 40 representatives from institutes and societies around the world. The Workshop Committee finalizes its work on which it had extensively worked during the last year. A new Education Committee was formed which will collect and post on the website all relevant material for schools and undergraduate teaching. The Public Lectures Committee is planning a program of MPE public lectures around the world. The website is presently being redesigned with search engine through the many activities that will soon be posted. Increasing the public awareness is one of the goals for the next months, and a new Public Awareness Committee has been formed. A Publication Committee started some work on a book for the public presenting MPE topics. _____________________________ 4. CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE MPE ISSUE OF THE COLLEGE MATHEMATICS JOURNAL Submissions are sought for the November 2013 issue of The College Mathematics Journal which will be devoted to the Mathematics of Planet Earth. This issue will be part of a year-long round of scientific activities conducted across the globe. The MAA is a partner in this project. More information is available at http://mpe2013.org/. Papers submitted should address the mathematical aspects of any of the innumerable issues affecting the earth. Potential areas for submissions include climate, meteorology, ecology, epidemiology, resource management, and biodiversity. Also of interest are areas of human interaction with the earth, including, but not limited to, economics, finance, politics, communication, sustainable development, and disaster management. In addition to articles, Classroom Capsules, Student Research Projects and other kinds of submissions are welcome. The web page (http://www.maa.org/pubs/cmj_info.html) has more about these items and more about writing for CMJ in general. To avoid duplication of effort, authors are encouraged to write the editor of CMJ (at cmj@oberlin.edu) describing their proposed paper. Final submissions must be received by December 1, 2012 to be assured of consideration. _____________________________ 5. CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR SPECIAL SESSIONS ON MPE AT MCA2013 The first Mathematical Congress of the Americas encourages proposals for special sessions that are connected with MPE2013. Proposals should be sent before July 31, 2012 to mca2013.sessions@gmail.com. __________________________ 6. MPE COMPETITION FOR AN OPEN SOURCE EXHIBITION OF VIRTUAL MODULES www.mpe2013.org/competition We remind you that the deadline for submitting modules is September 15, 2012. The purpose of the competition is to create a permanent Open Source exhibition of virtual modules related to some aspects of Mathematics of Planet Earth. This exhibition will raise the public awareness in the role of mathematics to understand our planet (geophysics, climates, how it supports life, how it is organized by humans), and to help protecting the planet and its resources for future generations. Already some museums have committed to present the winning modules in 2013 and others are contacted. We hope to have many physical exhibitions and museum installations built, also after 2013. We call for your help in advertising this competition to all those that are likely to be interested in participating. In particular, if your organization would be ready to mail flyers announcing the competition, we could help with this. Please contact Christiane Rousseau for this: rousseac@dms.umontreal.ca __________________________ 7. CALL FOR PROPOSALS FROM SAMSI The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) announces a new call for proposals to organize a summer program (short research program, of 1-2 weeks duration) or workshop focused on a topic within the broad spectrum of new or recent research themes covered by SAMSI, to take place during the summer of 2013. Proposals related to MPE 2013 would be welcome. The proposal should be sent to summercompetition@samsi.info by July 27, 2012. More information at http://www.samsi.info/proposals __________________________ 8.
