Gus Lehrer - Aisenstadt Chair Lecture Series

Gus Lehrer (The University of Sydney)

Gus Lehrer is an Emeritus Professor at the School of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Sydney. He was also a member of the Pure Mathematics research group. He received his PhD in 1971 at the University of Warwick.

His research interests are algebraic and geometric aspects of representation theory; reductive algebraic groups, particularly over finite fields; Algebraic geometry, spaces of configurations in algebraic varieties; Hecke and other algebras. Cohomological group actions; Knot-theoretic algebra, including diagram algebras and braid groups.

  • 1998: Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA)
  • 1999: Humboldt Research Award, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany
  • 2005 - 2009: ARC Professorial Fellow
  • 2015: Hannan Medal, Australian Academy of Science
  • 2016: George Szekeres Medal (joint), Australian Mathematical Society
  • 2016: Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to tertiary mathematics education as an academic and researcher, and to professional and community groups
