Summary:

Transformations and symmetries are fundamental concepts in mathematics that play a crucial role in science, and are often exploited in several artistic fields. We propose a tour through the universe of these notions, which will culminate by highlighting how they intervene in the counterpoint of Bach's Art of Fugue, which demonstrates with a masterly hand how to exploit them magnificently.

Biography:

François Bergeron is a professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). He is well known within the international mathematical community for his numerous contributions to research in combinatorics and algebra and their representations. He is also known to the public in Quebec for his numerous appearances on various stages: on the programs Découvertes and Les Années Lumières, in the magazine Québec Science, in the lecture series Au Coeur des Sciences, or as a participant in the documentary Achever l'inachevable. His passion for the promotion of mathematics has led him to give numerous conferences in cegeps under the aegis of the Institut des sciences mathématiques du Québec.
