Black Holes II: Theory and Mathematical Aspects

6-9 June 1999

Far Hills Inn, Val Morin, Québec, Canada

Co-sponsors:
Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR)
Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA)

This workshop will focus mostly on recent developments regarding the statistical mechanics of black-holes, and is meant to bring together relativists and string theorists who are interested in this exciting topic. It is the second installment in a series of similar workshops; the first one was held in Banff (Alberta) in June 1997.
Organizers:
Valeri Frolov Alberta
Werner Israel Victoria
Robert Myers McGill
Don Page Alberta
Eric Poisson Guelph

Invited Speakers:
A. Ashtekar Pennsylvania State
S. Carlip UC Davis
V. Frolov Alberta
W. Israel Victoria
T. Jacobson Maryland
R. Kallosh Stanford
G. Kunstatter Winnipeg
J. Maldacena Harvard
R. Mann Waterloo
E. Martinec Chicago
D. Page Alberta
L. Susskind Stanford
B. Unruh UBC
B. Wald Chicago

The workshop will involve a number of invited lectures, which will take place in the mornings and evenings, and a restricted number of contributed lectures, which will take place in the afternoons. We hope to leave the afternoons mostly free for discussions and outdoor activities. The lectures will begin in the morning of June 6 (Sunday), and will end at lunch time on June 9 (Wednesday).

The workshop will take place at the Far Hills Inn, in the ski-resort town of Val Morin, about 150 km north of Montreal. This charming inn will provide an intimate setting for the worshop. The inn also offers many opportunities for various activities: There are indoor and outdoor pools, two outdoor tennis courts, a pool table, ping pong table, hiking trails, and there is a golf course nearby. What's more, the inn's kitchens provide exquisite food! Please consult the instructions on how to get to the Far Hills Inn.

Accomodation at the Far Hills Inn is $98/person/night (double occupancy) or $138/person/night (single occupancy), plus 15% for taxes. The dollar amounts are all in Canadian currency. This includes the room and three meals per day. We will arrange for a shuttle to travel from the Montréal airport (Dorval) to the Far Hills Inn on Saturday, and back again on Wednesday. A welcoming reception will be held at the inn on the evening of June 5 (Saturday).

Please note that attendance at the workshop will be limited to around 60 participants, because of the limited number of rooms available at the Far Hills Inn. We therefore encourage people to register early!

Participants interested in contributing a talk should submit a title and abstract before April 1, 1999. The title and abstract should be sent by e-mail to Éric Poisson at poisson@physics.UoGuelph.CA.

Participants requiring an official letter of invitation should also contact Éric Poisson at poisson@physics.UoGuelph.CA.

This workshop will be held in conjunction with the 8th Canadian Conference on General Relativity and Relativistic Astrophysics (Montréal, 10-12 June 1999), organized by Rob Myers and Cliff Burgess.

An on-line Registration form is available to register for either or both activities.

You may consult the complete schedule of Black Holes II.
